About this lantern
A slim flat plate of matte black metal slides down between two books, and a small pagoda lantern hangs out over the spines on a fine chain. The books either side hold it upright — no drilling, no wires, about five seconds.
It is an accent light, not a reading lamp: a small pool of warm amber across the spines for the hour after the ceiling light goes off. Because it needs books either side to stay upright, it is not a free-standing bookend.

No. The bracket is one flat plate of metal that sits between two books — nothing clamps, screws or sticks to anything. The weight of the books either side is what holds it upright. Lift the books, slide it out, and the shelf looks exactly as it did before.

It is an accent light, not a reading lamp. It puts a small pool of warm light on the spines beside it, enough to change how the shelf feels once the ceiling light goes off. If you are looking for something to read by, this is not it — and we would rather say so now than take the return later.

Between two books
The obvious place, and the easiest. Slide the plate down between two upright books anywhere along the row and let their weight take it. Move it up a shelf next week if you like — nothing is fixed to anything.

On a shelf above a desk
One narrow shelf is enough. It runs on button cells, so there is no cable to route down the wall and no socket to sit near — the height of the shelf is the only thing that decides where it goes.

A few down one bookcase
One lantern looks lost on a tall bookcase. A few of them, spaced down different shelves at different heights, is what makes the whole wall read as arranged rather than stacked.

HOW WE PICK IT
Real metal. Nothing moulded.
Solid material and one simple mechanism, or it does not go on the page. The lantern bracket is a flat plate that two books hold upright — no clamp, no adhesive, no screw. If a thing needs a manual, it does not belong on a shelf.
WHAT COMES NEXT
One object now. The whole corner later.
The lantern is the first piece. More for the reading nook follows — same matte black and warm brass, same rule about tools and cords. We would rather add one thing a season than fill a page with everything.
Every other shelf light needs something. This one needs two books.
The usual options are a clip-on lamp that bites into the shelf, a strip of adhesive LEDs that peels off within a year, or a drill and a plug socket. Here is what changes when the light simply stands between the books.
