Two small metal probes pass a tiny, safe current through the water. The more minerals and salts are dissolved in it, the more easily the current flows. The pen converts that into total dissolved solids (TDS) and shows it in ppm within about two seconds.

The number is parts per million of dissolved solids. Reverse-osmosis water usually reads under 50, filtered and bottled water often 50–150, and much tap water 150–300. The screen glows green at 40 ppm or less and red above. Red is not a safety verdict: most mineral-rich water reads above 40.

Every source carries a different amount of minerals. Tap water changes with your area and pipes, filters remove different amounts, and bottled brands vary by spring. Test at room temperature and rinse the tip between samples for the most consistent readings.

HOW IT WORKS

Two probes. Two seconds.

1. Two metal probes go into the water.

    Tester pen on the Water Reading Guide

    No single number can. The pen shows the total amount dissolved. If a reading surprises you, check your local water report or use a certified lab kit.

    Not always. Spring and mineral waters naturally read higher because of calcium and magnesium. The pen is most useful for comparing: tap versus filter, one bottle versus another, this month versus last month.

    Take off the cap, press ON/OFF HOLD to switch on, dip the tip about 2 cm into the water and stir once. Press ON/OFF HOLD again to freeze the number. Rinse and replace the cap. It switches itself off after about 2 minutes.
