How to tell real waxed cloth
At kitchen temperature the wax stays set inside the cloth. It only softens when it gets warm — a hot car, a sunny windowsill, hot washing-up water — and sets again as it cools. That is the whole reason for the cold-water rule.

No. At kitchen temperature the wax is set hard inside the cloth, so the lining feels like stiff dry canvas rather than anything tacky. It only turns soft and slightly tacky when it gets warm — a hot car, a sunny windowsill, hot washing-up water — and it sets again as it cools. That is the whole reason for the cold-water rule.
Cleaning is the same one-minute job every time: turn it inside out, shake the crumbs into the bin, wipe the lining with a cloth and cold water, a drop of mild soap if it needs it, hang it to dry. No machine and no hot water — both take the wax out of the cloth rather than clean it.

It wears thin eventually — every waxed cloth does, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you a slogan. What shortens its life is heat: a warm loaf, hot water, a machine wash, or folding it into a hard crease.
The difference here is that it can be repaired. Lay the bag flat on a lined tray and warm it through in a low oven until the wax goes clear and settles back into the weave. A bag you can refresh is a bag you keep.

Only if it goes in warm. A loaf straight from the oven is still releasing steam, and steam trapped in any closed bag is exactly how bread moulds. Let it cool all the way through first.
This is the single most common reason people are disappointed by a bread bag, so we would rather say it here than let you find out.

THE WAX
Worked into the weave, not sprayed on top.
Look closely and you can see the beeswax sitting between the cotton threads, slightly translucent where it is thin and cloudier where it pooled. That is what a waxed cloth looks like. A sprayed coating sits on the surface as a shiny film and starts lifting at the folds within weeks. Hold our lining up to a window and you can see which one you have.
WHY IT WORKS
Plastic sweats. A bread bin dries the crumb out.
Bread does not go stale from air. It goes stale from the wrong air. A plastic bag traps the moisture the crust is trying to shed, so the crust turns soft and then the loaf turns mouldy. A bin does the opposite and pulls the water straight out of the crumb. Waxed cotton sits between the two: vapour moves slowly, the crust stays dry, the crumb keeps its water.
LOOKING AFTER IT
Wipes clean cold. And the wax can be brought back.
Turn it inside out, shake the crumbs out, wipe the lining with a cloth and cold water, hang it to dry. No machine, no hot water — both melt the wax out of the cloth. And when the lining does eventually thin out, a low oven melts the wax back down into the weave. Most bags in this category are disposable. This one is not.
WHAT FITS
A boule, a Dutch-oven loaf, or the supermarket sliced one.
42.5 × 31.5 cm, which is 16.7 × 12.4 inches. That takes a full round sourdough boule, a Dutch-oven loaf, bagels and rolls, flatbread, or a standard sliced sandwich loaf still in its own wrapper. What it will not take is a long uncut baguette — cut that one in half.
Crisp crust, soft crumb. Everything else gives you one or the other.
A plastic bag holds the moisture in and softens the crust. A bin and a paper bag let it straight out and dry the crumb. Waxed cotton is the only one of the four that does both jobs at once — and the only one you can bring back when it wears.

Yes, and you can leave it in its own wrapper. The bag is big enough to take a standard sliced loaf whole. It takes a sourdough boule just as easily — you don't have to choose between the Saturday bake and the Tuesday sandwich loaf.

Yes — the bag is freezer safe. Let the loaf cool completely first, then zip it closed. Take it out and let it come back to room temperature in the bag rather than on the counter, so the crust does not pick up condensation on the way.

No. The lining is food-grade beeswax, and a new bag has a faint honey smell for the first few days that fades on its own. It does not pass into the crumb. If the smell bothers you at the start, leave the bag open on a shelf overnight before you use it.
